As faithful readers will no doubt recall, I picked up an iPod along with my new iBook. Well, it sat in the box for a while, but I got it up and running a couple of weeks ago... a nice UI, to be sure, but really not much different than a portable CD player. But I plugged away, loading up five or six CDs per evening, until I now have about two days of music on there (only about 1/8th of its capacity), and this evening I hooked up the little thingie so it can play through the nearest radio...

...and now I get it. It's Radio My Favorite Songs All The Time, and every day's a no-repeat day with no commercials.

A guy could get used to this.

On the writing front... the synopsis for Gaia's Blood is up to about 3500 words and the plot is actually moving now... maybe too fast. I'll probably have to rejigger it to smoosh the exposition around before I send it anywhere.

We're about to get an iPod Shuffle which I intend to use as a gym music machine. I've been busily uploading all of my up tempo music from my fave CDs. And unlike making a tape, I don't have to put them in any order, just let them play randomly. Yup, I think I will like mine too, even if it's not a real iPod..

Given my isolation here in the Sun Melbourne office, I am very glad I gave in to the influence of co-workers back home and bought an iPod. I must admit, though, that I am not so fond of the UI. I really want an Off button. Half the time when I try to press Pause down long enough to shut it off, it goes to the first song in my alphabetical list. Bleah!

Glad you're enjoying yours.

It's true, you really can't quite understand the hype about iPods until you finally actually have one in your hands (or pocket, or attached to your belt) happily dispensing tune after tune in a way that *nothing* that small has a right to attempt to do. Then the wonderment of it all kind of hits you. I just inherited [livejournal.com profile] john_nyc's old one (since he got a new one) and it is just now hitting me that way. Yowza!

BTW, I friended you. It was high time. ;-) See you in San Jose?

The first accessory I suggest picking up for your iPod is the excellent (and recently released) O'Reilly book, "iPod & iTunes - Third Edition" by J.D. Biersdorfer. This is one of O'Reilly's wonderful "The Missing Manual" series, and I recommend the book very highly.

Thanks, Allan! I have to go to CompUSA very soon anyway, so while there I'll be sure to look for that book. See you very soon!

I like it too. I rarely take it off shuffle. Hah! I have a tape deck adapter for the car. I rarely take the iPod off shuffle and rarely play a CD these days.

the sound has a little hiss and weak treble. But the content is great.

That just makes it like Community Radio My Favorite Songs All The Time.
