As you may know, LiveJournal has added the ability to flag posts and journals as "adult content." What you may not know is that everyone's account was set by default to "collapse" (like an lj-cut) adult content. To change this setting, go to the bottom of this page: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/

Extra special added surprise: if your birthdate is not set, the options to show adult content are disabled. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] calimac for this update.)

Comments are screened. The purpose of this post is to inform people about how the software works (mechanism), not to provide a place to rant about it (policy). (I don't like it either.)

I have been thinking that one would have to flag one's birthday in order to be "legal" to this new adult content system. Since there are 2 birthdays on our journal, and since people seem to like making "Happy Birthday" posts based on the birthday associated with the journal, I haven't decided what I should do about this, nor had a chance to talk to B.

Hmmm. Pick a random date? Use his? Use mine? Use our journal-creation date? Use the date that falls just between his birthday and mine? Use our anniversary? Other? I'm taking suggestions, here.

K.

I don't really understand what the "collapse adult-oriented materials" means.... does that mean that I can see it or cannot see it? Thanks for helping a techno-illiterate guy.

You have performed a significant public service, as far as I'm concerned, merely by explaining what the bleep "collapse" means on the settings page.

Update: what it actually does, if you haven't set your birthdate, is display the dropdown menu for the various collapse-noncollapse option, but refuse to allow you to click on any of the other options - without explaining why. Even having read your post, my first thought was that this was a glitch in the system.

Which I thank you for, as I was unable to figure out why the heck I hadn't been able to set that option until I read your update.

You know, I've been wondering about that. I don't think I've posted anything since that came into effect. I added a fake birth date that should get the flag reset, if I've read your posting correctly. If you get a chance, could you let me know on Thursday night or Friday if I've done it right?

If/when you fill in the "birthdate" slot in your Profile, you also are given some options for "Who can see this?" So you can claim legal age without publicly announcing a birthday.

Also, I found that the system was happy to let me input just a month and year; maybe the year alone would do.
