Yes, we swapped back to incandescent bulbs in the bedroom ceiling fixture, because I so deeply disliked the color cast by the compact fluorescents in there. Maybe there's a CF bulb that doesn't turn the walls neon-custard colored, but so far, we haven't found it. And I'm not ready to re-paint.
About the only thing municipal governments can do about mercury in landfills is to make it trivial -- mindlessly easy -- to recycle hazardous household waste. They should be doing that, anyway. There will still be heavy metals in the landfills, but less.
Yep, our Ikea does multiple recycling efforts, including batteries and electronics, and kudos to them for that, but for most people the local Ikea will be a rare, special trip, which means they have to hang onto their recyclables until they make that trip, and then remember to bring them. It ought to be easier than that.
