We'll be buying our plane tickets for Potlatch very shortly. We'd like to spend a few days in the area before or after the convention, so we can see some Bay Area people, sights, and events rather than just the con.

The purpose of this post is to ask this: are you aware of anything happening before or after the con that would lead us to prefer one over the other? (Performers coming to town, major local traffic-generating events to avoid, etc.)

Wow, you're going to be at a con in Sunnyvale? The hotel is maybe 10 minutes from our house by car. Let me know if you need housing.

Square-dance-wise, El Camino Reelers is scheduled to hold a Plus/Advanced dance in Palo Alto on February 28th. AFAIK (and according to the ECR website) the caller hasn't been announced yet.

There's a gender-free contra dance in Oakland on March 7th. I've had great fun at that event a couple of times, and will probably go to that one, too.

You might want to surf through the events calendar at:
http://www.sanjose.com/calendar/

I'm also quite fond of the SF Gate and KQED events calendars, but neither one has events loaded yet for Feb/Mar 2009. Still, the URLs are worth keeping on hand:

I'll second that suggestion. They don't have any Nucleons, but they probably have the computer equivalent

You probably know - but I'll pass it along anyway because I've already been asked this question by others, and the info is going in PR3 - that you should fly to San Jose (SJC) for ease of access to the hotel unless you're planning on spending your pre- or post-con time in other parts of the Bay Area.

If you haven't done so in the past, I'd recommend touristing to the south, which many visitors to the Bay Area don't get to. There's interesting wineries up in the mountains if you care for that sort of thing, and the area of Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Carmel are well worth visiting. San Juan Bautista, ever been there? That's where the climax of Vertigo was filmed. Nobody I've taken there has ever seen the movie.

The people working on Potlatch will have more time to hang out with you after the con than before.

Three words: Winchester Mystery House.

No, this is not a joke. Why do you ask?
