9/6/06: Hotels, etc.

It's been a productive (and expensive!) fannish evening.

Unfortunately, we waited too long on World Fantasy Con; memberships cost us $150 each, and we had to settle for a room in the overflow hotel. It's not like we haven't known since the beginning of the year that we were going to Austin. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I also sent in my program questionnaire; I hope that it's not too late to get on the program.

We didn't (yet) sign up for the WFC banquet. Should we?

At the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we also made our hotel reservations for Nippon in 2007. We're in the Pan Pacific, which is slightly cheaper and has larger rooms (40 square meters -- seems HUGE for Japan) than the hotel attached to the convention center. I believe we have paid for the whole stay in advance -- good thing we have savings.

No writing tonight. I have given myself a couple of stars for the last two days for editing on the novella, but they haven't been very productive. I have changes I would like to make, but they're fairly deep and structural and I find it's much easier just to poke at wording here and there (and I have literally done the thing of putting in one word and then coming back half an hour later and taking it out). I'm thinking that I need to either set it aside for a while and work on something else -- and I do have something else I could be working on -- or shove it out of the nest. At the moment the nest thing is looking awfully attractive, but at the same time I've worked so long on this novella that I really, really want it to sell. Ponder, ponder.

The Japanese hotels are available for reservations? Online? When I looked last week it just said Real Soon Now.

Yeah, I didn't expect RSN to be before Halloween. Surprise!

I just posted about the process to the Nippon2007 LJ community.

Well that was an interesting reservations form... hope it was for real. I booked [livejournal.com profile] cynthia1960 and myself into the Pan Pacific as well. Thanks for the heads up.

On the plus side, the overflow mo/hotel is WAY cheeper.

On the negative side, I hear it's right on top of the railroad tracks and can be quite noisy. But the 2nd nearest mo/hotel to the Renaissance got even worse reviews for being mucho dirty. (Hooray for Expedia, and the honest reviews of Expedia users!)

I'm like 90% decided on going to WFC, especially if I book now and get a fantabulous deal on flight and mo/hotel... WorldCon was too cool and fun to not go to something similar again soon.

I vote for shoving it out of the nest and working on something else for a while.

That's what I thought you meant.

Submit it somewhere so you have to stop working on it for a while, work on something else, then look at it again if/when it comes back.

The night and low light teacher frequently got to a place where he would adjust the color in a print by very small increments, trying to get to perfect. Although I could see these very small increments, to me they didn't improve the overal picture (literally, hah!) enough to make the effort worhtwhile. And finally, he would say stop and look at it tomorrow.

Thinking of that is why I thought it would be a good idea to take the novella out of your hands for a while.

Hi David! In my limited World Fantasy Convention experience (the one in Providence, RI several years ago), the food was quite good -- but no banquet food can possibly be worth $100/couple as far as I'm concerned. Cripes, I shudder at paying $15 for a buffet since I eat about $3 worth! So Paul and I are skipping the banquet. I have a friend in Austin so that might be just the time to go out for a meal.....
