I put the fershlugginer novella in the mail to Analog on Monday. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] matociquala, who posted an entry that made me realize the time had come to stop tweaking and send it out to seek its fortune.

The "A Hacker, a Machinist, and a Writer Talk About Craftsmanship" panel at the Portland PerlMongers meeting on Wednesday went well. The audience seemed to enjoy it; I know I did. It was like a good convention panel, but without the convention. There's a podcast of the whole thing here: http://pdxpm.podasp.com/archive.html

Fall has arrived. It rained today, for the first time in I forget how long. Also, I had a dentist appointment first thing today and I wound up working late, so I woke up in the dark and got home in the dark. This will become increasingly more frequent in the coming weeks, alas, until it's dark and rainy all day every day. (But it beats shoveling snow, and the summers here are gorgeous.)

I've been catching up on my critiquing, and my reading. Finished 40,000 in Gehenna and Fun Home (the latter is absolutely brilliant) and started in on His Majesty's Dragon.

No writing. This must change soon.

Fun Home is the Alison Bechel (Dykes to Watch Out For) graphic novel, right? I heard about that on NPR a while back and rushed out to buy it. Loved it, loved it. Makes me want to write a graphic novel instead of messing around with all these old-fashioned words.

See you Saturday!

yay! Glad it went well. I was torn between coming and being on a roll with a story I *really* wanted to finish.... :( Eric was super pleased with the panel, I know!

Now if I could just get my house painted before the real rain starts. I was hoping yesterday's downpour wasn't a harbinger of things to come-- 75% of prep work done, no gutters, unfinished flashing-- as I got home from work, the rain spewing from the trough of my roof looked like some massive glacial runoff. With no gutters, it was forming into Crater Lake sized pools around my foundation, forcing me to dig drainage trenches out into my yard.

It was beautiful. I walked in the house, dripped, stripped, and said to my wife, "Why do we live here again? Oh yes, we love it. I forgot." Sad statement from a native.

And we haven't even had any real rain yet.

Little writing, lucky to get in 200 words a day, but hope that will change as we wrap up some house projects.

Yah, I have four out of six of the back-porch steps repainted, and it's entirely possible that statement will remain true until next summer. Whatthehell, what's a few years between coats!

Yes. Stairs, you can probably make that statement without it being too much of a problem, but but applying the same to a half-prepared house, is NOT good.

I'm scared.
