9/24/06: Back from Foolscap

Foolscap was a small, pleasant convention, and we had a nice time talking with jaylake, snarke, vofpracticality, twilight2000, akirlu, libertango, amy_thomson, and artist/author guest of honor Mark Ferrari. But, as has often been the case, it felt a little underpopulated... just not quite enough people for critical convention mass. Many Seattle fans were missed (although I'm sure they all had good reasons not to be there). Also, the last panel I was on, which concerned "why do so few science fiction characters go to church or have any religion at all?" was fairly stressful both because of its touchy subject matter and because of some argument over what the exact topic of the panel should be, so my convention ended on a slightly sour note. But many people congratulated me on the Hugo win and we had some fine meals.

In addition to the 268 words above on the work in progress, also participated in an exercise where I wrote a 700-word scene based on an artwork. I might finish that up into a whole story, I might not. Not right now, anyway. I have too many excuses not to start on novel #2 already.

Came home to find the first post-Hugo rejection, from Asimov's as it happens. That's okay, now I can send them the Jupiter story.

Never quite figured out where around Bellevue to eat when we were at Foolscap last year. There was a good Thai place a few blocks away, I remember that.

The best place near that hotel is Pogacha, a Croatian restaurant whose signature dish (the eponymous pogacha) is like pizza only better. There are also several Thai and Vietnamese options. The pan-Asian buffet called The Eating Factory appears to have closed, though.

I was sick, which I think of as not a good reason to miss a convention, but nevertheless a good reason not to spend time with my friends.

Sorry you didn't have a more entertaining reason not to be there. I kept seeing someone else, of your approximate height and hair color, wearing a feathered headdress like the one you had at Potlatch, and thinking it was you. Alas, it wasn't. You were missed.

I was at that last panel (Elizabeth Coleman, girl in the light blue shirt). I'm sorry it ended sour for you. Compared to some of the panels I've been to where everything degrades into arguing, that one went pretty well. I think you did a good job keeping things on track. I was prepared to leap away when CS Lewis was brought up, but thankfully, all went pretty well.

The panel did go pretty well of its ilk, but it raised my blood pressure; I'm just sorry the convention ended on that note rather than something more cheerful. I'm glad my attempts at moderation were well received.
