Someone in my office sent me a link to a blogger posting live at the keynote. Then I go to my LJ and see comments from you and Mpls friends. This is the first time I've done this sorta "asynchronous live" thing. It's very strange.
The first time I had that experience was when I watched a solar eclipse "live" over the web in 1994 or so. Things have changed quite a bit since then...
Erg. I just switched from Cingular to Verizon and picked up a Treo 700p.
I'm now wondering whether a 750 on Cingular might be a better choice as it would be much easier to switch to the iPhone later. I have 15 days from Saturday to make up my mind.

One thing I'm finding bizzare is that according to what I've read, all new cell phones (and this should include all Treos) are required to have GPS. If so, why didn't they enable them within the unit?

My 15 days ended on January 4. I have a two-year contract, and a serious aversion to buying a new $500 phone more often than every 5 years or so. I'm sticking with the Treo. I *am* happy with it, but I definitely have a serious case of "ooh, teh shiny" envy at the moment.
GPS is enabled on the Treo 700p, but I haven't found any location-aware services that can use it (with the possible exception of KMaps, which didn't intrigue me enough to justify the download).
Mind you, I prefer the GMail web interface to the GMail app, largely because the GMail app is a Java app and isn't nearly as well integrated with the platform as the Google Maps app (which is a true Palm app).
I know that the GPS is enabled because there's an option under Phone Preferences to share location information with 911 or with anyone ("off" is not an option). The status of this option is shown by the cross-in-a-circle icon at the top of the Phone page, which has little lines coming from it if it's enabled for anyone.
Thanks for the clues. I got the java vm and the gmail app working, but the KMap application gives me an error 8(
I was really hoping to test out location services. My hope is that someone will eventually make a gps application for the treo that uses the built in gps rather than forcing you to buy an external unit.
